Lipa archbishop: Global status brings greater mission to Padre Pio shrine

Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of Lipa said Wednesday that the elevation of the Shrine of Saint Padre Pio to an international shrine brings a greater responsibility to serve the sick, poor, and marginalized. The Holy See granted the designation to the 17-hectare sanctuary in Sto. Tomas City, Batangas, recognizing its growth from a local devotion into a major pilgrimage site for Catholics across Asia.

During a news conference held before Mass on September 23, 2026, Garcera stated that the shrine must remain centered on those facing illness and poverty through its monthly Healing Masses and pastoral care. He also urged the shrine to serve as a place of peace and reconciliation to address social anxiety, religious tensions, and political divisions.

The archdiocese is continuing a long-term master plan for the site that focuses on prayer, pilgrimage, and service to the weary. Garcera noted that the international status calls the shrine to welcome pilgrims from all over the world.
