López Romero fija su marcha en mayo de 2027 y dice que Roma aún no le ha escuchado

Cardinal Cristóbal López Romero informed Catholics in Rabat that he will submit his resignation in May 2027 when he reaches the age of 75. In a written statement dated September 12, the archbishop also stated that he is still waiting to be heard by the Dicastery for Evangelization regarding an ongoing investigation into his conduct.

The investigation follows allegations made public in July, which included claims from at least five women involving nonconsensual touching and abuse of spiritual authority between 2009 and 2024 in Paraguay and Bolivia. López Romero has denied these accusations.

The cardinal noted that his scheduled appearance before the dicastery, which oversees his diocese, was postponed. One reason for the delay was the death of Manuel Tagle Sr., the father of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the pro-prefect of the section within the dicastery responsible for the case. Tagle Sr. died on September 6 at the age of 96.
