Lourdes fully covers Rupnik mosaics ahead of Pope Leo visit, citing care for abuse survivors

The sanctuary in Lourdes has fully covered the mosaics created by Father Marko Rupnik ahead of the visit of Pope Leo XIV. Sanctuary spokesman David Torchala told OSV News that the mosaics in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary will remain covered even after the papal visit ends. Torchala stated the measure is a long-term solution rather than temporary decoration, and officials will continue searching for a permanent solution while consulting with the bishop and a committee established in 2024.

The mosaics, which depict the luminous mysteries of the rosary, were commissioned in 2008 and installed to mark the 150th anniversary of the apparitions. Father Rupnik is currently facing a canonical trial following accusations of spiritual and sexual abuse from more than 20 women. In March 2025, Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes ordered that parts of the mosaic art be covered.

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to arrive in Lourdes on the evening of Sept. 26 and will concelebrate Mass on Sept. 27 at the meadow facing the grotto.
