Maite Mompó: «Destruir la casa común es un ecocidio»

Maite Mompó, director of the Stop Ecocide movement in Spanish, says that destroying the planet constitutes ecocide, which she defines as causing extensive or lasting serious damage to nature. Mompó is working to have ecocide recognized as the fifth crime against peace under the jurisdiction of the Corte Penal Internacional (CPI).

The movement seeks to add ecocide to the list of crimes currently prosecuted by the CPI, which includes genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression. Mompó stated that the large scale destruction of the planet's life bases currently lacks criminal consequences and results in total impunity. She wants to establish individual criminal responsibility for decision makers.

The proposal to modify the CPI was submitted in 2024. Mompó is scheduled to speak at the Fundación Pablo VI on September 23 regarding artificial intelligence and integral ecology.
