Malawi’s Quasquicentennial Jubilee: Vatican Delegate Urges Clergy, Religious to Live Mission Through “detachment”

Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu urged priests and religious members to embrace missionary identity through sacrifice, encounter, and detachment during a meeting in Lilongwe on Friday, September 18. The Vatican official met with representatives of the clergy and religious at the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops offices as the country prepares to celebrate 125 years since the permanent establishment of the Catholic Church in Malawi.

Archbishop Nwachukwu, an official from the Vatican Dicastery for Evangelization, told the group that he brought the affection and blessing of Pope Leo XIV. He explained that the Holy See is accompanying the local Church through the Dicastery for Evangelization. The Archbishop arrived in Malawi on Thursday, September 17, where Bishop Martin Anwel Mtumbuka, president of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops, welcomed him at Kamuzu International Airport alongside other bishops and Church officials.
