Mass for Creation honors Season of Creation
Father Eugene Schmitt celebrated a Mass of Creation at Sts. Mary and John Parish in Evansville on Sept. 1 to honor the Season of Creation. The annual observance runs from Sept. 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, through Oct. 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
Deacon John McMullen, the assistant director of the permanent diaconate assigned to the parish, served as the homilist. McMullen described creation as the first revelation from God and stated that caring for creation is a matter of faith rather than a trend. He noted that while the world is skilled at using natural resources, it often fails to respect or cherish them.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says the season allows Catholics to thank God for the world and humanity while strengthening their responsibility to care for all creation.
