Mozambican Catholic Bishop Laid to Rest, Remembered as “man of joy”

The Catholic Diocese of Pemba's second bishop, Januário Machaze Nhangumbe, was buried on September 2 at Lhanguene Cemetery in Maputo. The funeral mass took place at the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Maputo following his death on August 23 at age 92.

The President of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique (CEM) described the late bishop as a man of joy and hope who remained dedicated to the Church. Archbishop Inácio Saúre, who leads the Archdiocese of Nampula, noted in his homily that Bishop Nhangumbe maintained a positive outlook and a commitment to service despite facing various hardships and difficulties. Archbishop Saúre said the bishop's joy reflected his ability to find reasons for hope even within challenging circumstances.
