Mozambique Bishops call for clarity on Bishop Osório Citora Afonso's death

The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique is calling for a full investigation into the death of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso to determine the circumstances of his murder and identify those responsible. In a statement released following an extraordinary plenary assembly held from September 2 to 4 in Matola, the bishops requested that judicial authorities continue their work until the truth is established.

Bishop Afonso, who served as the Bishop of Quelimane and the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, was killed at his residence in Quelimane more than three months ago. The bishops expressed concern regarding the lack of clarity surrounding the crime and raised questions about the identity of the killers and their motives.

The conference stated that uncovering the facts and ensuring justice are necessary steps for reconciliation and the renewal of the country. The assembly took place at the St. Augustine Interdiocesan Major Philosophical Seminary within the Archdiocese of Maputo.
