New Book on Theology of Suffering Lauded as Timely amid Growing Disregard for Others’ Sorrow

Bishop Rodrigo Mejia Saldarriaga praised a new book titled "A Theology of Suffering: Quest for Meaning" during its launch on September 12. Published by Paulines Publications Africa, the book by Fr. Melchior Marandu explores how to approach human pain without falling into despair or fatalism.

The Bishop emeritus of the Apostolic Vicariate of Soddo in Ethiopia noted that the book is a timely resource because media outlets often minimize the physical and moral suffering experienced by millions of people. He described the work as a tool for humanity rather than a simple textbook, stating it helps both those who suffer and those who assist them.

According to Bishop Rodrigo, a member of the Society of Jesus, the book does not attempt to solve the mystery of why people suffer. Instead, Fr. Marandu uses the Bible and theological works to suggest that suffering is a reality of life that may hold meaning even when that meaning is not obvious. The Bishop said the publication provides readers with a foundation for hope and strength.
