Newly Ordained Priests in Ghana Urged to Reject Competition for Power and Fame

Bishop Fianu of the Catholic Diocese of Ho cautioned two newly ordained priests against seeking power, fame, popularity, or public approval during their ministry. Speaking at the September 19 ordination of Deacons Jude Tachie and Edmund Elorm Ackuaku, the bishop told the men that the priesthood requires faithfulness to their calling and availability to the people of God rather than competition for status.

Bishop Fianu instructed the priests to imitate Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd by prioritizing the wellbeing of the faithful over personal interests. He stated that a good shepherd provides for, protects, and guides the flock without manipulating, abusing, or taking advantage of them.

The bishop encouraged the new priests to embrace service and collaboration as they begin their assignments. He reminded them that, as associate priests, they are expected to assist parish priests in their pastoral work.
