Nigeria’s Catholic Bishops Designate December 8 as National Day of Prayer and Fasting for Successful 2027 Polls

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has designated December 8, 2026, as a national day of prayer and fasting to support the success of the 2027 general elections. In a statement signed by President Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, the bishops called on Nigerians to prepare spiritually for the polls and urged stakeholders to ensure the elections are free, fair, and credible.

The announcement followed the bishops' second plenary assembly held from September 10 to 18 at the Our Lady and St. Kizito Pastoral Centre in the Diocese of Osogbo. The bishops encouraged eligible voters to participate in large numbers to elect qualified leaders according to their consciences. They also advised citizens to read the conference's pastoral letter regarding the upcoming elections and follow its guidelines.

To prepare for the elections, the bishops asked dioceses and parishes nationwide to organize voter mobilization and civic education activities. They also requested that the faithful participate in Rosary processions from October through December and observe end-of-month fasting and prayer.
