Notre Dame rector Elizabeth Greenop files defamation suit against online posters of anonymous abuse allegations

Elizabeth Greenop, a former campus residence rector at the University of Notre Dame, has filed a defamation lawsuit against several individuals who posted anonymous sexual abuse allegations against her online. The suit claims the graphic accusations, which appeared in June and July on an Instagram account called shareyourstory.notredame, constitute defamation and a false-light invasion of privacy.

Greenop is requesting subpoenas to identify 10 defendants currently listed as Jane and John Doe. The lawsuit denies all allegations and seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, legal fees, and a jury trial. An investigation has not determined the credibility of the claims, and Greenop has not been charged with a crime.

The University of Notre Dame placed Greenop on leave on June 29 and stated it has no comment on the matter. A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 6 in the St. Joseph County Superior Court in Indiana.
