United States Catholic bishops have released a new training guide to help priests and deacons teach faithful citizenship ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) created the material to help clergy explain how Catholic social teaching serves as a framework for moral discernment when participating in public life.

The guide does not support specific candidates, political parties, or electoral options. Instead, it provides resources for three to five hour training sessions or shorter one hour sessions, along with preaching materials and a video featuring several bishops. The USCCB describes committed citizenship as a way to live the Gospel through public responsibilities rather than an activity performed only every few years.

The timing of the release precedes the November 2026 elections, which will determine control of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The bishops intend for the material to move beyond simply encouraging people to vote by helping them understand why their faith should guide their political participation.
