Pope Leo begins new catechesis series on Gaudium et Spes

Pope Leo XIV began a new series of catechesis on the Second Vatican Council document Gaudium et Spes during a general audience on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. This pastoral constitution, which explores the relationship between the Church and the contemporary world, was originally signed by Pope Paul VI on December 7, 1965.

During the audience at St. Peter's Square, the pope urged people to recognize the contradictions of the modern era. He said that in a world marked by violence, injustice, and deep change, people should not be passive observers but should instead recognize the signs of the times and share in the needs of others while being inspired by the Gospel.

This new teaching series follows an eight-part analysis conducted over the summer regarding the liturgical constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium.
