For much of history, writers viewed the works of St. Maximus as those of a compiler who gathered the doctrines of other authors, such as Evagrio Pontico and Pseudo Dionigi. This perception led Tommaso d’Aquino to frequently refer to the saint as a commentator on Dionigi. Aside from Scoto Eriugena, who introduced the West to the Ambigua through a Latin translation, the true nature of his writing remained largely misunderstood.
