Politicians Alone Cannot Fix Nigeria: Catholic Bishops Urge Citizens to Take Responsibility for Nation’s Future

Catholic bishops in Nigeria stated that the country's future depends on the values citizens bring to public life rather than relying solely on political leaders. Speaking during interviews with ACI Africa following the conclusion of the Second Plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, the bishops urged Christians and young people to take responsibility for transforming society through concrete actions based on their faith.

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto said Christians should not place the entire responsibility for fixing the nation on politicians. He suggested that the country is declining due to a shortage of the values that sustain Christianity and encouraged believers to examine how effectively they live out their professed convictions.

Bishop Kukah called on Nigerians to reject violence and manipulation while respecting the dignity of others. He advised citizens to make responsible choices in political and social life and to avoid letting provocative comments or social identities dictate their responses to national challenges.
