Pope Leo XI sends Pontifical Letter to Latin American and Caribbean bishops

Pope Leo XI sent a letter to the bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean to mark the third centenary of the canonization of Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo. The Holy See Press Office reported that the Pope wrote the letter in response to a request from the bishops of Peru.

In the letter, the Pope reflected on his own experience serving as a bishop in Peru and how that ministry connected him to Saint Turibius, the patron saint of Latin American bishops. He noted that previous popes described the saint as a leader who was dedicated to evangelization, the renewal of Church life, and supporting the poor and vulnerable. The Pope used the saint's ministry to reflect on the importance of the ritual used to welcome a bishop into a cathedral or a pastoral community.
