Pope appoints Cardinal Mario Grech as Special Envoy to 250th anniversary of Diocese of Spiš

Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Mario Grech as his special envoy to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese of Spiš in Slovakia. The celebration will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Saint Martin’s Cathedral in Spišská Kapitula.

Cardinal Grech, who serves as the secretary general of the General Secretariat of the Synod, will lead a pontifical mission including two priests. Michal Janiga, a parish priest and vicar forane in Dolný Kubín and lecturer at the Spišské Podhradie Theological Institute, and Marek Tomaga, a judicial vicar and lecturer at the same institute, will join the envoy.

Bishop Francis Trstenský has declared a diocesan jubilee year to mark the anniversary of the diocese's canonical erection by Pope Pius VI.
