Pope calls for protection of migrant minors: It is everyone’s responsibility

Pope Leo XIV called on the public to take responsibility for protecting migrant and refugee minors during his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square on Sept. 23, 2026. The Pope noted that children and teenagers are particularly vulnerable to violence, torture, exploitation, and traumatic conditions while traveling migration routes.

The appeal comes ahead of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which the Church celebrates on Sept. 27 to promote the welcome and integration of displaced persons. In his message for the day, titled Even Just One of These Children, the Pope stated that both public and private institutions have an obligation to protect these young people. He urged everyone to involve themselves in supporting minors who often face life-threatening circumstances during their journeys.
