Pope Leo to visit migration center in Paris that welcomes all, no matter their legal status

Pope Leo XIV will visit Maison Bakhita in Paris on Sept. 26. The facility, which is run by the Archdiocese of Paris, provides shelter for people in extreme need, primarily migrants.

Located in the 18th arrondissement near the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the 15,000 square foot center opened in 2021. It serves as a hub for various Catholic organizations working to assist the poor. Director Gwendoline Fasano said the center welcomes everyone and provides a place for people to rest, be heard, and regain their self-esteem and spiritual lives.

The visit occurs ahead of the Church's observance of World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sept. 27. In an appeal regarding the day, Pope Leo said migrants, particularly vulnerable children, must always be protected and cared for, describing the exploitation of migrants as a tragic reality. The center is named after St. Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese former slave who became a nun.
