Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV admitted to hospital for afternoon lung surgery

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Oct. 13 to undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule. The Holy See Press Office confirmed the procedure will take place this afternoon.

Dr. Stefano Margaritora, the hospital’s chief thoracic surgeon, will lead the medical team performing the operation. The pope arrived at the hospital by car around 1 p.m. and will stay at the facility for one week of recovery. Because the special papal suite on the 10th floor is currently undergoing renovations, the pope is staying in a nearby room.

The Vatican has canceled all scheduled audiences for the pope through Oct. 20.
