Pope Leo XIV confirms Dom Antonio Bran Tecun as Abbot Ordinary of Monte Oliveto Maggiore

Pope Leo XIV has confirmed the election of Dom Antonio Bran Tecun as the Abbot Ordinary of the Territorial Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. The Holy See announced the confirmation on September 17, 2026, following an election by the Olivetan Benedictine Congregation.

As the abbot of a territorial abbey, Bran Tecun holds jurisdiction similar to that of a diocesan bishop. His authority extends beyond the monastic community to include the priests, parishes, and faithful within the abbey's territory.

Born in Villa Canales, Guatemala, in 1973, Bran Tecun is a monk of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. He made his solemn profession in 2000 and was ordained a priest on June 8, 2002. He holds degrees in mathematics and physics, previously taught those subjects at the Olivetan College, and served as the director of the monastery's agricultural business. The monastery is located in Asciano, in the province of Siena.
