Pope Leo XIV opens Diocesan Assembly in Rome

The Pope opened the Diocesan Assembly in Rome on September 18, 2026. During his address, he used the biblical story of Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb to address the current state of the Church and the city.

He asked the assembly to reflect on the questions asked by the risen Christ to Mary Magdalene: Why are you weeping? Whom do you seek? He stated that these questions apply to the Church and Rome today, specifically regarding the search for hope within parishes and daily life.

While acknowledging the work of parish communities, associations, and movements in evangelization and charity, the Pope also noted struggles within the diocese. He described a sense of bewilderment among some who feel they can no longer find where to meet the Lord.
