Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV undergoes successful lung surgery

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV is recovering in his hospital room after surgeons successfully removed the lower lobe of his right lung on Oct. 13. The Holy See Press Office reported that the procedure to remove a lung nodule went according to schedule.

A medical team led by Dr. Stefano Margaritora, the director of thoracic surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, performed the 90-minute operation using a video-assisted technique. In a joint statement with Dr. Luigi Carbone, the doctors said the examination confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, which had been suspected during preoperative tests. The pope spent approximately 3 hours in the operating room and returned to his room on the 10th floor following a period of observation.

The Vatican has canceled all scheduled audiences for the pope through Oct. 20. He is expected to remain at Gemelli Hospital for one week of recovery.

During the surgery, Cardinal Baldassarre Reina, the vicar of Rome, presided over an evening rosary in the hospital chapel. Religious communities across Rome were invited to pray.
