Pope Leo XIV undergoes thoracic surgery

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery on Tuesday, October 13, to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The Holy See Press Office reported that the 90-minute video-assisted procedure was successful and without complications.

An intraoperative histological examination confirmed a diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, which doctors had suspected from preoperative tests. After the surgery, the Pope woke up normally and returned to his room on the 10th floor following a brief observation period.

Stefano Margaritora coordinated the surgical team, which included Luigi Carbone, Elisa Meacci, Maria Teresa Congedo, and Leonardo Petracca Ciavarella. Massimo Antonelli and Giovanni Punzo served on the anesthesiology team.
