Pope Leo XIV Urges Catholic Youth in West Africa to be “builders of bridges”

Pope Leo XIV urged Catholic youth attending the first West African Youth Day in Accra, Ghana, to act as builders of bridges by promoting unity, inclusion, justice, and peace. In a video message played during the opening ceremony on Tuesday, September 8, the Pope encouraged young people to collaborate on initiatives that drive positive change and reach out to vulnerable or marginalized populations.

The Pope told the participants that walking together requires ensuring no one is isolated, excluded, or rejected. He acknowledged that many young people face crises, uncertainty, and insecurity that can affect their hopes and future plans. He encouraged them to move forward without losing hope despite these challenges.

The gathering, which runs from September 7 to 11, follows the theme of Catholic youth acting as agents of peace and hope in West Africa. The Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa organized the event, which brings together young people from 16 countries in the region.
