Pope Saint Boniface I dies

Pope Saint Boniface I died in Rome on September 4, 422.

Elected Pope on December 28, 418, following the death of Pope Zosimus, Boniface initially faced a contested election alongside Eulalius. The emperor ordered both men away from Rome until the dispute was resolved, but Boniface was eventually recognized as the legitimate Pope after Eulalius failed to follow the imperial decree.

During his reign, Boniface worked to reform corrupt practices and limit the privileges of certain bishops. He also supported St. Augustine in the theological struggle against Pelagianism. Before becoming Pope, he reportedly served as a priest ordained by Pope Damasus I and acted as a representative for Pope Innocent I in Constantinople.
