During the speech, the Pope also addressed the nuclear arms race and reaffirmed the Vatican's opposition to nuclear weapons. He described the doctrine of nuclear deterrence as mistaken because it fuels new arms races, stating that peace is built through dialogue and justice rather than a balance of power.

The Pope arrived in Paris to begin a four day trip to France, marking the first official state visit by a pope in 18 years. President Macron said the visit brings a source of hope to the French people. Upward of a million people are expected to see the Pope during his stay.
