Pope Montini visits International Labour Organization

Pope Montini visited the headquarters of the International Labour Organization (ILO) on June 10, 1969, during an apostolic journey for the 50th anniversary of the organization. During his visit, he reaffirmed that human labor takes precedence over material goods, stating that the person comes first in work.

Montini addressed the director, David Abner Morse, and noted the importance of the invitation. The ILO was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on December 10, 1969.

The relationship between the Church and the institution was established when the first director-general, Albert Thomas, created a position for a special advisor for social and religious issues. This role was held by the Jesuit André Arnou, which helped create a structured relationship with the Vatican.
