Preserving Christian Culture Like Slovenia

Blessed Anton Martin Slomšek, a Slovenian bishop, is honored on his memorial day for his efforts to protect Slovenian language and culture.

Born in 1800 during the rule of the Hapsburg monarchy, Slomšek lived through a period when the empire attempted to suppress Slovene culture and language to achieve unification. Upon his ordination in 1824, he vowed to use his spare time to promote his native language and culture.

After his installation as the Bishop of Lavant in 1846, Slomšek expanded these efforts by promoting religious education alongside Slovenian cultural identity. He is remembered for his care for his flock and his dedication to his office.
