‘Putting parishes together is not doing justice to the needs’

The Irish Church is managing a decline in clergy numbers through three primary methods: asking priests to delay retirement, recruiting clergy from abroad, and clustering parishes into larger units.

Garry O'Sullivan of The Irish Catholic reports that these measures serve as temporary holding operations rather than long-term solutions for the collapse in priest numbers. In the Diocese of Elphin, more than half of the priests are now from overseas, while fewer than twenty Irish priests under the age of 75 remain in the diocese. The Bishop of Clogher has stated his intention to continue bringing in more priests from abroad to address staffing needs.

While some defend international recruitment by noting that Ireland once sent missionaries abroad, O'Sullivan notes that this comparison does not hold because Irish missionaries originally went out to build dioceses. Additionally, a priest in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin questioned how the Church will replace older priests with failing health once they pass away.
