Maricarmen Abascal evicted from Madrid home

Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman with a disability, was evicted from her home in the Retiro district of Madrid on Wednesday, September 23. Police officers removed her from the residence at 46 Alcalde Sainz de Baranda street on a stretcher.

Abascal had lived in the home for 71 years. This eviction followed several previous attempts that had been postponed.

The removal drew a crowd of neighbors, activists, politicians, and cultural figures. During the event, Ana Belén recited poetry and adapted the song La puerta de Alcalá. The eviction has sparked public debate between those criticizing property rental practices and those defending the enforcement of judicial rulings.
