Ramón Castro: «Lo que hoy se usa para destruir debe estar al servicio de la vida»

Ramón Castro stated that tools currently used for destruction must instead serve the preservation of life during a discussion regarding disarmament in Mexico. He noted that while the Catholic Church has helped by setting up weapon exchange modules in church courtyards to provide trusted spaces for communities, material disarmament must be paired with deeper social changes.

Castro said that reducing the number of weapons increases the possibilities for a dignified life and prevents moments of anger from turning into irreversible tragedies. He argued that peace requires more than just removing weapons; it requires creating conditions where people no longer feel the need to use them. This includes rebuilding trust, strengthening families, providing alternatives for young people, and supporting victims.

The Mexican Episcopal Conference views the current disarmament process positively but requires comprehensive strategies to build true peace and security. Castro identified deep causes of violence that must be addressed, including inequality, corruption, impunity, and criminal economies.
