Pope Leo XIV accepts Cardinal Re's resignation, appoints Cardinal Tagle as new Dean of the College of Cardinals

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re as dean of the College of Cardinals and appointed Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle as his successor. The Holy See announced the change on Friday, noting that the appointment was approved on October 8.

Cardinal Re becomes dean emeritus and retains the suburbicarian see of Sabina-Poggio Mirteto. Cardinal Tagle receives the title of Ostia, which is reserved for the dean, without resigning the title of Albano.

For the first time since 2007, the dean of the College of Cardinals is a cardinal elector. According to the apostolic constitution Universi dominici gregis, the dean is responsible for communicating the death of the pope.
