Renewing political culture is topic as women religious gather for national event

Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore told leaders of women religious that renewing American political culture requires a renewal of human character, relationships, and spiritual life. He spoke during a keynote address on Sept. 18 at the 2026 National Assembly of the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious held at the Augustine Institute in Florissant, Missouri.

Archbishop Lori said the Church understands that societal renewal begins with saints rather than structures. He explained that the renewal of persons must happen before institutions can be renewed, and that reconciliation with God must precede lasting peace.

The Archbishop noted that religious life should remain above politics so the Church does not become captive to partisan ideologies. He said women religious make a unique contribution to this task.
