Pope Leo XIV appoints Sílvio Pereira Castro as auxiliary bishop of São Miguel Paulista

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Sílvio Pereira Castro as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of São Miguel Paulista in Brazil. The Holy See Press Office announced the appointment on September 23, 2026, noting that Castro will also hold the titular see of Mauriana.

A priest of the Diocese of São Miguel Paulista, Castro has served as the rector of the diocesan seminary since 2010. His previous roles include diocesan economist from 2012 to 2025, cathedral vicar, and parish priest for the São Benedito pastoral area. He has also served on the diocesan college of consultors and the presbyteral council.

Born in Cianorte in 1968, Castro studied at the Faculdades Associadas Ipiranga de São Paulo-SP and the Pontificia Faculdade de Teologia Nossa Senhora da Assunção de São Paulo-SP. He was ordained a priest on February 18, 2006.
