Sacred Promises

Father Lance Harlow explains that men being ordained to the priesthood make specific resolutions and promises to their ordaining bishop. These commitments serve as a lifelong source of grace for priests as they mature in holiness and face the fatigue of ministry.

During the ordination process, the bishop asks the candidate if he resolves, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to perform the office of priesthood as a worthy worker alongside the bishops to care for the people of God. This resolution defines the priest's life as one dedicated to teaching, sanctifying, and governing through an office granted by the bishop, rather than pursuing personal self-seeking, side jobs, or careerism. The candidate also resolves to preach the ministry of the word worthily and wisely.
