More than 200,000 people gathered in Reims on September 22, 1996, to celebrate the 1,500th anniversary of the baptism of Clovis with Pope John Paul II.

During the event, the Pope urged French Catholics to return to the sources of their baptism. The crowd greeted the Pope by telling him that France loves him.
