San Genaro de Nápoles

The Diocese of Sololá–Chimaltenango honors St. Januarius of Naples on his feast day, September 19. The saint is known for a recurring miracle in which his blood liquefies in the presence of witnesses during his annual feast.

According to the diocese, Januarius served as a bishop and was martyred during the persecutions under Diocletian. After learning that his friends, including Sosso and Proculus, were imprisoned for publicly confessing their faith, Januarius went to the prison to offer them comfort. His frequent visits led authorities to arrest him.

Januarius, along with Festus, a deacon, and Desiderio, a lector, were detained and taken to Nola. After enduring interrogations and torture, the three men were forced to walk in heavy chains ahead of the governor's carriage to Pozzuoli. They were then imprisoned alongside their companions.
