Sant’Eustorgio, vescovo

The Diocese of Milano identifies Saint Eustorgius as the ninth bishop of Milan and a prominent opponent of the Arian heresy. He is remembered by Saint Ambrose for his firm stance against this teaching.

Eustorgius is credited with building a five-aisled basilica, which Saint Ambrose referred to as the "new" basilica. According to tradition, Eustorgius died on September 18 and was buried in the basilica that now bears his name.

An 11th-century legend claims that after his election, Eustorgius traveled to seek imperial approval. The story states he received a large marble sarcophagus containing the relics of the Magi as a gift. He reportedly placed this relic in the basilica he built near the baptismal font of the early Christian community. Following the destruction of Milan in 1162, Rinaldo, the bishop of Cologne, moved the relics of the Magi to Cologne.
