Schism in the Anglican Church Finalized: Alternative See to Canterbury Established in Africa

The Global Anglican Communion has established its seat in Abuja, Nigeria, creating an alternative to the See of Canterbury.

The decision was made during a meeting in Recife, Brazil, on August 22, 2026. This move follows the launch of the Global Anglican Communion in early March 2026, which was created to support Anglican ministry after a woman was appointed as Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON), a movement founded in 2008 to restore biblical teaching to the center of the communion, represents the majority of the world's Anglicans. GAFCON operates independently of the British See of Canterbury and rejects the traditional Instruments of Communion. Archbishop Laurent Mbanda, the chairman of GAFCON, previously endorsed the Abuja Statement, which declared that the movement had reordered the Anglican Communion into a global Church.
