South Sudanese Bishop Calls for Continuation of Predecessor’s Legacy of Peace

Bishop Edward Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio has asked the faithful in South Sudan to honor the peace legacy of the late Bishop Joseph Gasi Abangite. In a statement released Monday, September 7, Bishop Hiiboro urged Catholics to participate in the upcoming anniversary celebrations for Bishop Gasi, which take place on September 13.

Bishop Hiiboro described Bishop Gasi as a major contributor to the current peace in the country and noted that current leaders are the results of Bishop Gasi's work. He invited the people of God to use the week of September 13 to reflect on Bishop Gasi's life and to consider how they can improve their own actions. Bishop Hiiboro encouraged the community to unite through creative activities to make the commemorations meaningful.

Bishop Gasi died on September 12, 2014, at age 86. He led the diocese from his consecration in April 1975 until his retirement in April 2008.
