Parents can influence how a child's conscience is formed, though they cannot control a child's thoughts or religious choices, according to psychologist and therapist Helena Teixeira Respondek. Respondek noted that during adolescence, young people begin to rely more on their own reason and seek their own paths.

A 2022 CBOS study found that more than half of surveyed young people stopped practicing between the ages of 14 and 16. The study also noted that 78 percent of non-practicing students previously went to church.

The CBOS report "Why Poles are Leaving the Church" identified reasons for this, including the politicization of the church, materialism, hypocrisy, and pedophilia scandals. While these issues were mentioned, the study found that generalized attitudes and assessments were more common reasons for non-practice. 2024 data from the same center indicates that the decline in practice is most rapid among those aged 18-24.
