Statement on the Report of the Attorney General

Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., issued a statement on September 30, 2026, expressing sorrow regarding a report from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. The Bishop apologized to survivors of child sexual abuse, stating the Diocese failed to protect vulnerable individuals.

The Diocese of Fall River said it is reviewing the Attorney General's report and remains committed to survivor healing and enforcing professional standards to prevent future abuse. To build a culture of protection, the Diocese maintains a list on its website of clergy with credible allegations of minor abuse dating back more than 70 years.

The Diocese also reports all accusations of child abuse to law enforcement, even if the victim is now an adult. Additionally, the Diocese has agreements with three District Attorneys to provide documents for investigations into clergy abuse without requiring a subpoena.
