Swiss March for Life draws thousands as masked cyclists attempt disruption

Approximately 2,200 pro-life advocates gathered in the Oerlikon district of Zurich on Sept. 19 for the annual March for Life. Under the theme "Together for Life!", participants focused on encouraging fatherhood and restoring family life. While organizers estimated 2,200 attendees, police reported more than 1,000 participants.

The event faced disruption from about 200 masked protesters on bicycles who attempted to block the route, overturned trash bins into the road, and set off firecrackers. Swiss police used two water cannons to disperse the protesters, conducted identity checks, and shielded marchers to maintain control. No injuries were reported.

Municipal authorities have prevented the march from entering Zurich's city center for six consecutive years, citing security risks from hostile counterprotesters. Beatrice Gall, president of the Swiss March for Life, told CNA Deutsch that officials apply a double standard by permitting other demonstrations in the city center. Observers noted that the successful management of the Oerlikon protest suggests law enforcement can handle counterprotests in central locations.
