Synodality enters parish planning phase ahead of 2027 assembly in Hong Kong

The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong has moved its synodal process into the parish planning phase to prepare for a diocesan assembly in February 2027. Eight pilot parishes are currently testing Conversations in the Spirit and are required to submit three year pastoral plans before Advent.

More than 300 representatives from schools, religious institutes, youth groups, and migrant communities met at Wah Yan College in Kowloon on September 19 for the launch of Journeying Together in Synodality. Organized by the Diocesan Ad Hoc Committee for Synodal Development, the program seeks to increase participation among women, youth, and migrants.

Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., stated that synodality is based on the shared baptismal dignity of clergy, religious, and laypeople. He explained that the process involves deep listening and discerning the guidance of the Holy Spirit rather than secular democratic voting or political lobbying. While hierarchical leaders retain final decision making authority, Chow said leaders must respect communal discernment and maintain mutual accountability.
