Tanzania: Catholic Archdiocese of Mwanza Launches Major Seminary
The Catholic Archdiocese of Mwanza launched St. Michael the Archangel Major Seminary on October 17 at Nyegezi. Archbishop Renatus Nkwande presided over the inaugural Mass, which was attended by bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful.
Archbishop Nkwande stated that the seminary was established to address the increasing number of young men seeking priesthood formation and to reduce the high costs of educating seminarians in national or international institutions. The seminary will initially admit students for the philosophy stage of formation while the Archdiocese prepares to include theological studies.
The establishment of the seminary follows resolutions from the Diocesan Synod. The institution uses the motto "Defendite fidem in Deum," which means "Defend the faith in God."
