TANZANIA: St Michael the Archangel Major Seminary Launched in Mwanza; First Rector Appointed

The Catholic Archdiocese of Mwanza launched St Michael the Archangel Major Seminary on October 17 at Nyegezi to strengthen the formation of men discerning a vocation to the priesthood. Archbishop Renatus Nkwande presided over the inaugural Mass, which was attended by bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful.

Archbishop Nkwande stated that the new seminary addresses the growing number of young men seeking priesthood formation and the high costs of sending seminarians to study outside the Archdiocese or abroad. He noted that national seminaries are also facing increased demand for placement.

The seminary will initially admit seminarians for philosophy studies while the Archdiocese prepares to expand into other stages of formation, including theology. The institution operates under the motto Defendite fidem in Deum.
