The $1,700 choice

Eligible taxpayers will be able to redirect up to $1,700 of their federal taxes toward students starting in 2027 through the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit.

According to a commentary by Joe Pisani published by the Diocese of Bridgeport, the program allows qualifying taxpayers to donate up to $1,700 to an approved nonprofit Scholarship Granting Organization. For every dollar donated, the taxpayer receives a dollar in federal income tax credit. Pisani explains that the credit offers taxpayers a choice between sending those funds to the IRS general fund or directing them toward educational opportunities for students.
