The Sins of the Pious – A Homily for the 26th Sunday of the Year

Msgr. Charles Pope identified three specific sins common to religious people in a homily for the 26th Sunday of the Year. Addressing the Gospel text where Jesus speaks to chief priests and elders, Pope noted that these sins include lost connections, leaping to conclusions, and lip service.

Pope explained that lost connections occur when people attempt to sever their links with others they fear or dislike. He suggested that people may become cynical or dismissive toward those in troubled circumstances, such as people struggling with addiction or loitering in certain neighborhoods, rather than recognizing their shared connection as children of God.
